Jaylon Tate Picks Up DePaul Offer

Simeon point guard Jaylon Tate visited DePaul on Wednesday night and came away with a scholarship offer from the Big East School. He talks with WeAreDePaul.com about his visit, offer, and upcoming season on the preseason state title favorite Wolverines.

Jaylon Tate elevated his stock with solid play throughout the high school season and running a talented Meanstreets 16U squad during the travel season. He was one of the hottest names in Illinois because of his transfer from De La Salle Institute to Simeon for his junior year. The talented guard discussed his visit to DePaul's Lincoln Park campus on Wednesday.

"It was a real good visit," said Tate. "Even living in Chicago and being around DePaul it was my first chance getting to see the campus, dorms, and facilities. I went to the student center and met with the coaches."

Tate, who is rated as a 4-Star prospect by Scout.com in the class of 2013, learned more about the head coach of the rising Big East program.

"I was impressed with Coach (Oliver) Purnell overall," said Jaylon. "I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him much. I learned a lot about him. Getting to meet him today, he is a really nice guy and an even better coach. I got a great feel talking to him."

What did the coaches talk with him about?

"They talked to me about how I did during the summer and the recruiting process," Tate said. "They said they are looking forward to following me during the upcoming season at Simeon and expressed their interest in me."

During the visit Tate received his fourth scholarship offer.

"After the tour we came in his office and watched a highlight tape of the team coming up this season," said Jaylon. "He then started talking about the future and made the offer."

He spoke about his reaction to the news.

"I was happy and humbled by it," said Tate. "I am glad he recognizes my talent and the hard work I put in. It shows that I have to keep working hard."

The staff feels Tate would fit in well with their other commitments and where they are looking to go in the future.

"They said they like my style of play and they can see me fitting in with their style of play with where they see their team going in the future with Billy (Garrett Jr.) and DeJuan (Marrero) committing. Those are up tempo players. I am just like the guard they have now. They see me playing just like him and playing in an up tempo style."

Another selling point for the Blue Demons is getting to play with 2013 commit Billy Garrett Jr. who Tate has known for a while and have played together since they were kids.

"They mentioned it," said Tate. "It is something I should really consider because we have a great connection on and off the court."

This visit was a great opportunity for Tate to get to know the whole DePaul basketball family.

"I have known Coach Billy Garrett and Coach Purnell, but I got to meet the other assistant coaches," said Tate. "I got a really good vibe from all of them. It seems like they want the best for all of their players and I respect that."

When can fans expect a decision?

"Whenever the time is right. I am taking time to process it all and continuing to work on my game."

He is a coveted prospect and the top in-state guard left on the board. DePaul will have to fight off many contenders for his services.

"My offers are from Northwestern, Xavier, DePaul, and Providence," said Jaylon. "I am getting looks from Butler, UCLA, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Villanova, Florida State, Tennessee, Marquette, and Mizzou."

Tate just began classes at Simeon and is enjoying his new surroundings.

"Today was only my second day of school," said Jaylon. "So far it is good. I like the environment and the teachers are amazing. I really like it. As far as basketball goes there is nothing better. They have a great coaching staff with Coach Rob (Smith)."

Tate breaks down his expectations for 2011-2012.

"I am looking to raise my stock. I had a good sophomore season at De La Salle and a solid summer and spring. I am looking to keep that going and make a statement at Simeon."
