Coming into his freshman year at DePaul nobody knew what to expect of forward Cleveland Melvin. Yet it didn't take long for Melvin to establish himself as a presence for the Blue Demons.
At first, Cleveland Melvin was a little slow coming out of the gate. He only started in three of DePaul's non-conference games, but by the time Big East play started, Melvin had solidified himself. Melvin started in all 15 Big East games that he appeared in.
Melvin led the Blue Demons in scoring with 14.3 points per game, tied for second in rebounding at five points per game and also managed to block 1.5 shots per game.
Cleveland's Big East conference statistics were even more impressive with 17.4 ppg and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Melvin received the Big East's Rookie of the Week honor four times during the season.
He was only the second DePaul freshman to earn conference Freshman of the Year honors since Quentin Richardson did so in Conference USA back in 1999.
Melvin, who was the sixth leading scorer in the Big East and was fifth in field goal percentage (52.2%) in the league, figures to be among the conference leaders again this season.
On DePaul's recent European tour, Melvin again led the Blue Demons again in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Cleveland averaged a double-double of 23.8 ppg, 11 rebounds per game, and 3.8 blocks per game in four games against professional teams from France and Monaco.
