DePaul to Scrimmage Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Badgers will be visiting the friendly confines of DePaul's McGrath-Phillips Arena at the end of the month to take on the Blue Demons in a closed scrimmage in preparation for the coming season. DePaul coach Oliver Purnell talks about facing Bo Ryan's Badgers in this report.

Under NCAA rules, schools are permitted to play another Division I team in a closed scrimmage in lieu of an exhibition game. The scrimmage is not open to the public. Nobody other than players, coaches, managers, and officials are allowed to attend the scrimmage. It is closed to all media and no score or statistics are released.

The Badgers are coming off a 25-9 season where they lost to NCAA tournament runner-up Butler in the Sweet 16.

"I think it will be great for us," said Purnell. "Obviously Bo runs an outstanding program. It's an experienced team and a team that clearly should be far ahead of us right now. It will be good."

DePaul played four professional teams in Europe this summer, but that will be nothing like the type of competition that the Badgers will bring.

"We played against teams in France that weren't as good as us and we beat them," Purnell said. "A couple of teams that I thought were even with us, we also beat and we had to win in the fourth quarter. So I thought that was good. Now let's play a program that's ahead of us right now. It will be a great gauge."

Bo Ryan's deliberate-paced hoops versus Purnell's uptempo style will present a very interesting contrast in style of ball.

"I think it will be good," said Oliver. "I think there will be some frustration put into place for our guys to have to deal with. They're not a team that's going to turn the ball over a lot. I wouldn't say that they're methodical, but they're certainly a lot more methodical than we are."

The Badgers return senior guard Jordan Taylor who averaged 18.1 points per game last season and led the nation with a 3.83 assist-to-turnover ratio. Taylor has been named first-team pre-season All-America by Athlon and the Blue Ribbon Yearbook.

"They've got a first round draft choice there," said Purnell. "He's a guy that's going to control things. It kind of reminds you of the Big East, you're always playing against a great guard".

Following the Wisconsin scrimmage on the 29th, the Blue Demons will return to McGrath Arena for an exhibition game against Lewis University on November 5th.
