Defense Eludes DePaul in 102-95 Win

There wasn't a lot of defense being played at Allstate Arena on Saturday afternoon as both teams neared the century mark in the second half. DePaul walked away with a 102-95 win over Chicago State.

DePaul (6-3) had led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but lost focus on the defensive end.

"I'm just not real pleased with our performance today at all," said DePaul coach Oliver Purnell. "I thought our guys came out with decent energy at the beginning, but that faded pretty quickly. The defensive end of the floor was just not very good."

The Blue Demons were also outrebounded by Chicago State by a 49-38 margin.

DePaul did manage to score 26 points off of Chicago State miscues.

Sophomore forward Cleveland Melvin scored a career-high 30 points to lead all scorers.

Fellow sophomore Brandon Young managed just one point in the first half, but then came alive with 20 points in the second half to finish with 21 points, with three of six from beyond the arc, and seven assists.

"He didn't show up in the first half," Purnell said of Young.

"Coach talked to me (at halftime) and said I was playing soft and that I had to pick it up," said Young. "I'm a leader, so I can't let my teammates see me like that. So I had to pick it up and let them know how to react to stuff like that."

Senior guard Jeremiah Kelly had a solid outing going five of nine from beyond the arc on his way to 19 points.

Freshman Jamee Crockett scored 11 points, blocked two shots, and had 2 steals in his second straight start for DePaul.

Chicago State (0-9) had five players finish in double-figures. Matt Samuels led the way with 20 points. Lee Fisher scored 19. Jeremy Robinson added 17 points and Aaron Williams contributed with 15 points. Clarke Rosenberg came off the bench to record a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort for the Cougars.

The Blue Demons head out on the road next for a Wednesday night non-conference meeting at Northern Illinois.
