Game Preview

As the Blue Demons prepares to play the Seton Hall Pirates (19-10, 8-9) on Saturday night, DePaul (11-18, 2-15) will be bidding adieu to seniors Krys Faber and Jeremiah Kelly on Senior Night.

For a pair of young men who have endured enough losing, it would be a great sendoff before the Big East Tournament if the Demons can snatch one last victory in what has been another trying season for DePaul.

"We'd like to get some momentum going into the Big East Tournament," said Coach Oliver Purnell on his weekly WSCR radio show. "It's an important game for both programs."

While DePaul has stayed in games and played down to wire in many defeats (Louisville, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, St. Johns, Providence etc.) they are coming off a humbling loss to West Virginia on Tuesday, 92-75.

Assuredly, the Demons of tired of achieving moral victories and would like to finally grab another Big East victory that has eluded them since they won at Rutgers on January 25. Since that game, DePaul is 0-for-February dropping nine games in a row.

On the other end of the spectrum are the Pirates who are trying to ensure a bid to the NCAA Tournament while also trying to secure a first-round bye in the Big East Tournament. Most pundits have Seton Hall in the big dance, but a slip up to DePaul could prove costly.

Expect the Pirates to play determined to keep their NCAA Tournament status on solid ground by giving a good effort against the Demons.

In fact, after losing 77-72 in overtime at home to Rutgers last Saturday, Seton Hall point guard Jordan Theodore (16.2 PPG and 6.7 APG) proclaimed to Seton Hall reporters that losing momentum will, "not stop us from going to DePaul and kicking butt."

DePaul will definitely have their hands full with Theodore and Herb Pope (15.3 PPG and 10.5 RPG) as they represent one of the better inside-out duos in the Big East. Not to mention they also boast a third option in Fuquan Edwin (12.8 PPG) who can get hot at a moment's notice. In the last game these two teams played on January 10, Edwin went off for a career-high 28 points on 10-14 shooting in the Pirates 94-73 victory.

"They had an outstanding year," Purnell said when referring to Theodore and Pope. "I know those two guys are going to show up and be a handful."

While DePaul is not playing for any postseason glory, surely pride could play a factor. At last year's Senior Night, DePaul valiantly fought Rutgers despite losing 68-64.

Although the season has been a disappointment, winning on Senior Night could be just the antidote the Demons need before heading to the Big East Tournament.
