"Right now we're just hungry," said Morgan at Big East media day. "We're ready to start the season. I feel we can turn it around. We're returning Brandon Young, Cleveland Melvin, Donnavan Kirk and Jaime Crockett. With that, we're bringing back experience and I feel with the experience and the new guys that we have, we are ready. Now that we have been through the struggles I feel this is our year to turn it around."
While Melvin and Young get most of the accolades for the Demons, Morgan is as much a key cog as anyone for DePaul. His outside shooting and veteran leadership is an integral part in DePaul's quest to turn things around. Morgan is DePaul's third-leading returning scorer (9 PPG) and is tops among all returnees in three-point field goals made (54).
Although Morgan got off to a rocky start in Friday night's opener against UC Riverside, scoring eight points on 3-11 shooting, don't expect that to be a trend.
Morgan worked hard in the offseason to get ready for the rigors of another grueling Big East season. In fact, Morgan played and trained with some NBA players this summer.
"In the first summer session I got to work with the team and did summer school," Morgan said. "In the second summer session I was able to go to Indianapolis and work out with Ed Schilling. I got to work out with guys like Gordon Hayward, Tim Abromaitis and Mike Conley. We did a bunch of ball-handling drills. That's one aspect of my game that I really worked on."
After Indianapolis, it was a trip back home to Las Vegas where Morgan continued his workout regimen with some more NBA luminaries.
"I was (then) able to go home and workout at Impact Academy," Morgan continued. "I got to work out with guys like Kyle Lowry, Tayshaun Price and Jared Dudley. They showed me different moves, like one-two dribble pull-up moves. It was a good summer."
After two seasons in the Big East, Morgan knows what to expect night in and night out in this rugged conference.
"You have to be mentally tough," Morgan said about the grind of the Big East. "Any game can be a tough game. From top to bottom (this is a tough league) and you just have to be mentally tough."
After playing two years at a high-major level, Morgan now has experience to lean on . Along with Melvin and Young, Morgan is embracing the role of a leader.
"I've embraced it a lot," Morgan said. "I need to (be a leader). With the help of Brandon and Cleveland I just (feel the) need to step up and embrace that role."
Morgan won't shy away in predicting bigger and better things for him and his teammates this year. Morgan feels this year could be the year DePaul finally turns it around after five straight losing seasons.
Morgan said that anything less than a postseason bid will be a disappointment.
"I feel that it is (if failing to secure a postseason would be a disappointment)," Morgan concluded. "We should be a postseason team. Our goal is to make it to the postseason and win some games in the Big East. I feel this is our year."
