Thursday's game marks the first home game this year that DePaul (1-0) is playing at their home in suburban Rosemont and also the first game of the Cancun Classic tournament. Granted Rosemont is nowhere near as warm as Mexico, but the Blue Demons will play two home games in the Cancun Classic before heading off to Cancun next week for the final two games.
Gardner-Webb (0-2) is coming off a season where they finished 12-20 overall and 6-12 in the Big South. They are projected to finish fifth in the Big South's South division going into this season. Senior guard Tashan Newsome was named preseason second-team All-Big South after averaging 12.3 ppg and seven rebounds per game).
Update: GWU announced on Thursday afternoon, that Newsome will miss the game due to a back injury.
The Bulldogs had returned all five of their starters from last year plus sixth man Max Landis. However, on Saturday night against Division III Covenant, GWU lost center Mike Byron to injury for three to four weeks . Byron had scored 10 points against North Carolina on Friday.
If what North Carolina coach Roy Williams says has any bearing, the Blue Demons could get a bit of a challenge from the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Thursday night.
"Gardner-Webb has an experienced team, and they made us look bad at times," Williams said after defeating the Bulldogs 76-59. "I'm disappointed in how we played, but I'm not disappointed in my team. I think it was a good night for us, and I think we learned a lot."
GWU managed to force the Tar Heels to turn the ball over 18 times and held them to one of 12 from beyond the arc in that contest. That suggests the Runnin' Bulldogs should give DePaul something to work against on offense.
The Bulldogs relied on their three point shot against Carolina, but shot only 6 of 22 from trifecta territory.
After facing an opponent like the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, GWU will not be intimidated coming into Allstate Arena. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
The Bulldogs will be looking for their first win against a Division I team after losing 66-62 to Lipscomb on Wednesday night.
Libscomb came back from being down 16 points in the second half. Again GWU struggled on three point shots, going two for 17 from beyond the arc.
With little rest, the Bulldogs will have to catch a Thursday morning flight to Chicago to face the Blue Demons.
