If the Mayans were right, then there won't be any game between DePaul and the Retrievers of Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday.
Should we all somehow survive the apocalypse, then the Blue Demons will be going for their seventh consecutive win against UMBC. The last time DePaul won that many straight games, Joey Meyer was coach of the Blue Demons. That was the 1993-94 season.
Dr. James Naismith may have actually got the idea for the game of basketball from the Mayan game of "pitz". The object of the game was to put a rubber ball through a stone hoop. A human was sacrificed at the end of a game of pitz.
Fortunately for the players in Saturday's game there are no human sacrifices in the modern game of basketball.
The Retrievers have had since December 12th to prepare for this game. UMBC is coming off their winter exam break. The Retrievers have only one win this season over a Division I opponent, that being Towson.
Despite their record, UMBC did manage to lead 31-30 at Marquette with 16:52 remaining. That shows that the Retrievers can be a pesky bunch.
"I'm more worried about ourselves," DePaul coach Oliver Purnell told WSCR Radio. "They are capable. They are a Northern Illinois level team. Anytime you go up to Marquette and you lead well into the second half, that says this team is capable at playing at a high level. Particularly if you're not on top of your game. We know that they're a Division I basketball team that can beat you. It really is about our approach, our preparation, and about our mindset as we go into the game. We need to come into this game with a hard edge. We need to be pushing all the time. We need to play the game with ultimate respect for them. But at the same time with a burning desire to play at a high level than we did versus Northern Illinois. To play at that Arizona State level and beyond, that's where we want to get to. We want to improve as we move forward here."
Despite being from Baltimore, UMBC actually has fewer players from Maryland on their roster than DePaul does. Blue Demons Montray Clemons, Cleveland Melvin, and Brandon Young all hail from Baltimore.
Three players are averaging in double figures for UMBC. Senior guard Ryan Cook is averaging 16.8 points and seven rebounds per game. Junior forward Chase Plummer averages 11.5 ppg and former St. Bonnies big man Brett Roseboro brings in 10.3 ppg and 6.8 rpg.
As long as the world doesn't end, Saturday's game will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
