R. J. Curington will give DePaul the offensive firepower in the backcourt that they are lacking right now. The 6-4, 170 lb. shooting guard from Oak Hill Academy pledged to DePaul on Thursday evening.
"Me and my family decided that DePaul would be the spot for me," Curington said. "I have a good relationship with the coaches. I feel like this is the spot where I could be at."
Curington sees DePaul as a program that is on the upswing.
"The basketball program is awesome, with the conference change, they are just going towards success and I want to be a part of that," said the three star prospect.
Curington chose DePaul over interest from Creighton, Michigan State, Rutgers, St. Louis, Texas, UNC-Wilmington, and Western Kentucky. He recently visited Michigan State and Texas.
R.J. also recently attended a DePaul game at Allstate Arena while home on a Holiday break from school. He originally hails from nearby Dyer, Indiana.
"When I visited, there was an immediate kind of connection with the coaching staff."
Curington is also familiar with a few of his future teammates.
"A few guys I know – DeJuan Marrero, Jodan Price, and Jamee Crockett," said R.J. "I have a good relationship with those guys. I also have a good relationship with another commit – Billy Garrett, Jr. He's a good friend of mine as well. I felt like being with those guys who are from my area, who I played with on the AAU circuit and camps of that sort. I feel like we can get things together and make it happen. You can expect big things in the future."
Curington is the third player to commit to DePaul from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia . Star guard Rod Strickland played for Oak Hill back in the 1980's and Ricardo Crumble was there in the 1990's.
"I'm a shooter and a scorer and just a winner," said R.J. "Shooting wise, I was the highest three point percentage shooter on my team. I contributed last year along with D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera who is going to Georgetown and Jordan Adams who is going to UCLA."
Curington recently dropped 19 points on Chicago Simeon, with Purnell looking on, at the HoopHall tournament in Massachusetts.
"The senior guard has put together a pretty strong senior season," said Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels after the game. "His jump shot is his best weapon and he was on the mark today hitting three of his five three-point attempts and going 7-for-12 overall from the field. Off the catch from three, Curington is pretty consistent and he's developed a one-dribble pull-up as well. Curington is one of the better available 2013 shooting guards."
Curington joins Garrett, and juco big men Greg Sequele and Forrest Robinson in the class of 2013 for DePaul.
