On Saturday, Billy Garrett, Jr. and the Morgan Park Mustangs reached the goal they strived for all season long by winning an IHSA state championship and cutting down the nets in Peoria. Read all about the game and view postgame video in this report.

The Morgan Park Mustangs put away Cahokia in the fourth quarter to win 63-48 at Carver Arena in Peoria to claim the IHSA 3A State Championship trophy.

It was Morgan Park's second state championship and first since winning the title in 1976. The Mustangs finished the season with a 33-3 record.

DePaul signee Billy Garrett, Jr. led all scorers with 14 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.

Garrett, Jr. has been starting at Morgan Park since Mustangs coach Nick Irvin threw him into the lineup midway through his freshman year.

"I think I've matured a lot," said Garrett. "There's always room for improvement. Nick threw me into the fire. I think that's one of the best things that's ever happened to me as far as basketball goes. It taught me how to win with a team and how to deal with tough situations at such a young age. Now it just comes second nature to me. Without Nick doing that, I don't know that I'd be the player that I am now."

Garrett, Jr. became the first Blue Demon prospect to win a state title since Quentin Richardson did it at Whitney Young in 1998.
