Tommy Hamilton Talks about DePaul Decision

One of the most pressing needs DePaul has as it looks toward the 2013-14 season, is some size down low and on Monday Oliver Purnell and crew did their best to shore up that weakness by signing 6-10 forward Tommy Hamilton, Jr. Hear what the future Blue Demon has to say in this report.

Tommy Hamilton, Jr., who currently preps at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, is originally from Chicago and is a power forward/center with a vast array of skills.

Hamilton has great hands and good court awareness. Hamilton is also dangerous facing the basket, as he has a jumper that opposing teams must respect.

Hamilton has been a highly-touted recruit for years after blowing up with the Mac Irvin Fire and Whitney Young High School early in his high school career. After injuries have derailed his career, Hamilton is looking for a fresh start and has high hopes in turning DePaul into a winner.

In the end, Hamilton had a comfortable feeling with DePaul and the coaching staff.

"I just felt comfortable with the staff," Hamilton explained about his decision. "Me and my family though that it was best."

While Hamilton is prepping down in Florida, at heart he is a Chicago kid and he is excited to come home again.

"I'm looking forward to playing in front of my family and friends," Hamilton said. "Playing in my hometown, hopefully we give the city a positive glow."

Hamilton joins Billy Garrett Jr., R.J. Curington, Greg Sequele and Forrest Robinson in the 2013 recruiting class.

Hamilton has a special bond with Garrett and Curington, seeing as all three have known each other since grade school.

"Me, Billy and R.J. have been playing together since we were younger," Hamilton added. "Since about fifth grade, us three were on the same AAU team all the way up until eighth grade. Of course, R.J. went to Oak Hill, but me and Billy have been playing with each other every summer. The chemistry among us three is already there."

Hamilton says that he is in great shape and in full health. Hamilton also knows that the DePaul staff is trying to recruit the city harder and was aware that ex-Whitney Young teammate Paul White had an in-home visit with head coach Oliver Purnell.

Hamilton hopes their play on the court can help towards future recruiting successes.

"Hopefully we can influence them (future prospects) with our play," Hamilton said. "That's (trying to get other kids to follow him to DePaul) different territory of being part of a program and trying to influence their (decisions)."

Along with Sequele and Robinson, Hamilton will look to bring some much needed toughness to the frontcourt.

For now, Hamilton is taking everything in stride and eagerly awaits his freshman season at DePaul.

"(I) just want to come in and take it slow, take it day-by-day, and just try to help the program," Hamilton concluded. "(I want to) give the program what I got and accept what the coaches give me and be an accepting freshman."
