Demons Down Flyers

After a slow start in the first half, the Blue Demons fought back in the second half to take down the Division II Lewis Flyers 84-79 in tonight's exhibition at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

DePaul senior guard Brandon Young attributed his team's slow start to "first game nervous jitters."

The Blue Demons went into the locker room at halftime trailing Lewis 37-34.

DePaul then started the second half on a 8-0 run with a lineup that featured freshman Billy Garrett at point guard, Young at shooting guard, with junior college transfer Greg Sequele pressing at the power forward position.

DePaul never trailed again.

"We were ready to punch them first, instead of them punching us first," Young said of the team's second half effort.

DePaul coach Oliver Purnell experimented with a number of lineups and rarely repeated the same lineup twice in this exhibition tuneup. He liked the smaller, quicker, pressing lineup that he used more of in the second half.

"We had a lot more energy in the second half," observed Purnell.

Four players finished in double-figures for the Blue Demons. Young led all scorers with 22 points. Cleveland Melvin scored 17 points and corralled nine rebounds. Freshman Billy Garrett, Jr. scored 12 points and dished out 4 assists off the bench in his debut. Charles McKinney added 11 points.

DePaul got the rebounding effort that they were looking for from Purdue transfer Sandi Marcius, who had 10 rebounds and four points in 21 minutes of play. Freshman Tommy Hamilton IV also grabbed seven rebounds to go along with four points as both he and Marcius started tonight in Purnell's bigger lineup with both men standing at 6-10.

Lewis had five players finish in double-figures. Gabe Williams led the way with 14 points. Julian Lewis and Jeff Jarosz scored 13 apiece. Ryan Jackson added 11 and Kyle Nelson contributed with 10 points.

The Blue Demons will open the regular season on November 9th against Grambling State at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
