Game Preview

After a 96-58 blowout of the Grambling State Tigers on Saturday, the Blue Demons (1-0) step up in competition with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-0) on Wednesday night.

This one will be more evenly matched. According to Ken Pomeroy's College Basketball Ratings, the Blue Demons are rated 84th and Southern Miss is rated 87th.

Last season the Eagles set an all-time school record with 27 wins. Yet even with 27 wins, they failed to make the NCAA Tournament. USM did manage to advance all the way to the quarterfinals of the NIT.

Expectations are high this year in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in Donnie Tyndall's second season as coach. Some publications are even predicting a first place finish in Conference USA for the Eagles.

USM returns a solid core from last year's squad, but loses leading scorer Dwayne Davis and their leading rebounder, former North Lawndale star Jonathan Mills.

They do return four starters including senior point guard Neil Watson, who was named to the Second Team All-Conference USA team last season after averaging 9.8 points and 4.9 assists per game.

Forward Daveon Boardingham averaged 8.6 ppg and four rebounds per game. Swingman Michael Craig averaged nine ppg and 5.1 rebounds per game. While guard Jerrold Brooks is the highest returning scorer after averaging 10.9 ppg.

Minnesota transfer Chip Armelin is returning from injury for this game after missing USM's two exhibition games and the win over Jackson State. Armelin averaged 5.2 points per games as a sophomore for the Golden Gophers.

The Eagles play a lot of zone defense with some press thrown in, so, it will be important for the Demons to shoot the ball well from the perimeter in their first game at Allstate Arena, as well as rebound well on the offensive end.

Southern Miss is coming off a 67-51 win over Jackson State on Friday night.

Boardingham led the way for USM with 15 points and a career-high of nine boards. Brooks scored 11 points, while Watson had nine points, a career-high nine rebounds and dished out four assists.

Southern Miss is an old Conference USA foe of DePaul's. The two teams have tangled nine teams, all of which came during C-USA play.

This game counts as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic exempt tournament. DePaul will face Wichita State in that tournament in Kansas City.

The Last Time

The two teams last met on January 29th, 2005 in Hattiesburg. DePaul walked away with a 70-48 win over the Golden Eagles. Drake Diener led the Demons with 18 points, while Sammy Mejia scored 10 points and corralled eight rebounds.
