FAU Message Board
After a stretch that featured four games against teams in the top 75, the schedule gets a bit easier for the Blue Demons on Thursday night.
When you look at the Florida Atlantic Owls' resume this season and you will see a mixed bag. While FAU is 3-6, they do own a 75-64 win over Central Florida. The Owls also played Boston College tough on the road in a 82-79 loss.
We should note that two of FAU's three wins came against Division I opponents.
FAU is coming off a 83-63 romp over Jacksonville. FAU leading scorer Pablo Bertone put up 20 points and six rebounds in that contest. Kelvin Penn added a career-high 15 points to go along with eight boards.
With that win, FAU coach Mike Jarvis set the school record for most career wins with 69 victories.
Pablo Bertone is the go-to guy for the Owls. Following the win over Jacksonville, Bertone was named Conference USA Player of the week. Bertone is averaging 18.9 points per game for FAU and has scored more than 20 in the last three games. In the win over Central Florida, Bertone put up a career-high of 31 points.
The Owls are riding a two game winning streak going into Thursday's game.
The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 as part of a Blue Demon doubleheader. The DePaul women's team will face No. 5 Kentucky at 6 p.m. in Lincoln Park followed by the men's game at 8 p.m. in Rosemont.
This will be DePaul's second game against a Conference USA opponent. The Demons are 0-1 against C-USA this season, having lost to Southern Mississippi last month.
DePaul coach Oliver Purnell plans to have senior guard Brandon Young back in the lineup for Thursday night. Young missed Friday's loss to Arizona State with a sprained ankle.
For the Blue Demons to get a win on Thursday night, they are going to have to improve on their zone offense against the Owls.
"They play a lot of zone," said Purnell. "The last two games, they've been very successful and they've gone almost exclusively with a 2-3 zone. So obviously we're preparing for that."
The Last Time
On December, 22nd, 2010, the Blue Demons got coach Oliver Purnell his 400th career win with a 71-62 win over Florida Atlantic at Allstate Arena. Cleveland Melvin led all scorers with 23 points. DePaul had three players finish in double-figures. Senior Jimmy Drew came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Sophomore Tony Freeland also provided a spark off the bench with 12 points.
Greg Gantt led the way for the Owls with 20 points. Dennis Mavin came off the bench to score 12 points and Raymond Tucker scored 11 points in the losing effort for FAU.
