By the time this game tips off on Monday afternoon, the Xavier Musketeers could be ranked. Xavier is receiving votes in both the Writer's poll and the Coaches' Poll this week. In the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings, Xavier is ranked 31st as of this writing.
Xavier's 14-4 record could be misleading though. 13 of their 14 wins have come at home with their only road win coming at Alabama. The Musketeers went 0-3 in the Battle for Atlantis played in the Bahamas in November.
The guy DePaul has to watch out for is sophomore guard Semaj Christon. Christon is tied with Cleveland Melvin as the league's sixth leader scorer while averaging 16.3 points per game, shooting 46.2% on threes, and is fourth best in assists in the conference dishing out 4.2 dimes per game.
The battle on the glass won't be easy on Monday. The Musketeers are tops in the Big East in rebounding margin at a plus 6.9 rebounds. A big reason for that is junior center Matt Stainbrook. The 6-10 center is the third leading rebounder in the league while grabbing 8.6 rebounds per game. Stainbrook is also scoring 11.1 ppg. Between Christon and Stianbrook, Xavier has a good inside-outside game going.
The Musketeers are coming off a home win over Georgetown where they rallied from 17 points down in the second half to walk away with an 80-67 victory.
Xavier's one weakness is at the free throw line. The Musketeers are not a good free throw shooting team at 67.3%. If the officials turn this one into a free throw contest late in the game, DePaul will have a real good chance.
The Blue Demons have a short turnaround going into Monday after having lost 88-62 at 6th ranked Villanova on Saturday afternoon. The last time they had that type of turnaround, DePaul won at Butler. This could be a team that is resilient on little rest between games.
The Last Time
On December 27, 1997 at Cleveland's Gund Arena, the 13th ranked Xavier Musketeers defeated DePaul 73-56.
Darnell Williams led Xavier, coached by the late Skip Prosser, with 21 points in the first game of the Gatorade Rock-n-Roll Shootout doubleheader.
Torraye Braggs turned in a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Gary Lumpkin added 14 points and seven assists.
Jermaine Watts led the way for DePaul with 21 points. Willie Coleman added 14 points in the losing effort for the Blue Demons.
