Garrett Named Big East Rookie of the Week

CHICAGO – Not once, not twice, but five times for DePaul freshman Billy Garrett Jr. as he was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week again after averaging 21.5 points and 3.5 assists in games against Xavier and Marquette. The frontrunner for the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year leads all league freshmen with his five weekly honors.

In addition to averaging over 20 points per game, Billy Garrett, Jr. shot .462 (12-26) from the field overall and .636 (7-11) from three-point range. The Chicago native also went 12-for-16 (.750) from the free throw line.

Garrett opened the week with 17 points, five assists and two rebounds in 28 minutes at Xavier. He followed that effort with a career-high 26 points against Marquette with two assists and a rebound in 37 minutes. Against the Golden Eagles, he knocked down a career-high five three's including the game-tying three at the end of regulation with just under two seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.

The Chicago native leads all BIG EAST freshman with five Rookie of the Week honors and is the league freshman leader in scoring, assists and free throw percentage.

DePaul rookies have combined to earn the league Rookie of the Week award seven times this season. In addition to Garrett, Tommy Hamilton IV was named the weekly winner on Nov. 18 followed by R.J. Curington on Feb. 3.

Bryce Cotton of Providence was named the league's Player of the Week while Doug McDermott from Creighton, Georgetown's Markel Starks, Jamil Wilson from Marquette, Seton Hall's Fuquan Edwin and Ryan Arcidiacono from Villanova were picked to the Weekly Honor Roll.
