Butler Spoils DePaul's Senior Night

Butler exacted some revenge on the Blue Demons on Thursday night and ruined DePaul's senior night by defeating the Blue Demons 79-46 at Allstate Arena.

It was just one bad thing after another for DePaul (11-20, 3-15). The Blue Demons lost guard Charles McKinney prior to the game to an ankle injury. Billy Garrett Jr. had a nosebleed right before tip-off. Then center Sandi Marcius turned an ankle stepping on a ball. Following all that, center Tommy Hamilton IV was called for a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected for throwing an elbow in the first half.

It seemed like the Blue Demons were snakebitten. DePaul shot one for 18 from beyond the arc on the night and 32.7 percent from the floor.

"It was clearly a frustrating loss for us," said DePaul coach Oliver Purnell. "Obviously I'd like to see us compete harder and better."

Butler (13-16, 3-14) outrebounded DePaul by a 46-29 margin. The Bulldogs were led by Alex Barlow who scored 19 points and shot seven of nine on the night. Khyle Marshall added 18 points for Butler.

DePaul honored seniors Brandon Young, Sandi Marcius, and Edwind McGhee before the game as they appeared on the Allstate Arena court for the final time in their playing careers. All three seniors started the game.

Young led the way for DePaul with 24 points.

"It's not the way I wanted it to end," said Young. "I wouldn't trade nothing for this experience I had at DePaul. I had a great four years here. If I had to do it over again I'd be here at DePaul."

Freshman guard Billy Garrett, Jr. added 12 points in the losing effort.

DePaul's seed for the opening round of the Big East tournament next week is not decided yet. Depending on the outcome of Butler's game on Saturday and the St. John's vs. Marquette game, DePaul could receive either the nine or 10 seed for the games beginning on Wednesday night.

- 2014 point guard prospect Cha Cha Tucker attended tonight's game. Tucker is a 5-11 point guard who is originally from Lansing, Michigan. He is currently at ABCD Prep for a year of postgraduate work.

- Senior Manager Carlos Rodriguez was also honored before the game as part of the Senior Night ceremonies.
