Develle Phillips Talks About DePaul Decision

DePaul Coach Oliver Purnell nabbed his first commitment in the class of 2015 today. We talk in-depth with the newest member of the Blue Demons in this report.

Develle Phillips verbally committed to Purnell while on DePaul’s campus for his official visit on Sunday.

Phillips chose DePaul after receiving interest from Cincinnati, Clemson, Maryland, Memphis, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Towson, USC, Xavier, and West Virginia.

“Coach Purnell is a good man,” Phillips said of his decision to attend DePaul. “I felt like DePaul would be a good fit for me. He’s a person who will take care of me, make sure that I do what I need to do, and get me where I want to go. DePaul is a great school. Chicago is a great city and I made my decision based on how it went. The environment was the biggest factor in my decision. I knew I have to go somewhere for four years. I wanted to go somewhere where I know they will take care of me.”

A lot of credit goes to DePaul assistant coach Renard Phillips (no relation), who has been recruiting Develle since the day he arrived at DePaul.

“They’ve been recruiting me for about three years,” said Phillips. “I’ve known Renard for a few years. I’ve known Coach Purnell for about three years now. They said that I would be a good fit and can play a lot from the very beginning.”

Develle gives the Blue Demons a solid power forward prospect for the class of 2015.

“I just play hard,” Develle said of his game. “I play with a lot of energy. I play tough and gritty on the inside. I’ve got a nice jumper. I can dribble. I’m a good player all-around. I rebound really good.”

Phillips is a power forward who can eventually develop into a small forward in the long run.

Develle feels that he is up to the task of making an impact in the Big East as a freshman.

“The Big East is a great conference. I know it’s going to be tough,” said Phillips. “I think I should be able to do good in the league.”

Before he arrives at DePaul, Phillips will have to finish out his senior year with the Clinton Christian (Maryland) Eagles.

“Our goal this season is to win and probably get a couple of championships and get (Clinton Christian) back on the map again.”

Phillips is DePaul’s first commitment for the class of 2015, and the Blue Demons are also actively recruiting a number of Develle’s teammates with the DC Premier AAU program for next season.

“I heard Coach talk about (2015 center prospect) Oumar Barry and I know they are recruiting (2015 forward) Charlie Thomas,” Develle said of his former teammates. “It would be a good experience to play with them. Charlie has been my buddy since the ninth grade.”

Phillips received quite a bit a publicity over this summer because of the below video of his throwdown over seven footer Thon Maker
