Garrett Named 2nd Team Preseason All-Big East

NEW YORK – Coming off an outstanding freshman season capped with the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award, DePaul’s Billy Garrett Jr. was named second team preseason All-BIG EAST on Wednesday. The league honors and preseason poll were announced at the start of BIG EAST Media Day at Madison Square Garden.

Garrett led all league rookies last season with 12.4 points per game and 93 assists. He was one of just two sophomores on the 10-player first and second teams joined by Rysheed Jordan of St. John’s.

Villanova was received all nine possible first-place votes and 81 points as a unanimous selection as preseason BIG EAST favorite. Coaches did not place their own teams in their ballots. Georgetown was slotted second with 67 points and the Hoyas will be led by BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera. Georgetown edged St. John’s for second place in the poll by just two points and Xavier was picked to finish fourth with 52 points.

The preseason coaches’ poll rounded out with Providence, Seton Hall, Butler, Marquette, Creighton and DePaul. Butler and Marquette were tied for seventh in the preseason picks.

The 2014-15 Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team includes three seniors and two juniors. In addition to Smith-Rivera, the members include seniors D’Angelo Harrison of St. John’s, Jayvaughn Pinkston of Villanova and Matt Stainbrook of Xavier. The other junior is Kellen Dunham of Butler.

The preseason All-BIG EAST second team is a younger group than the first team with two seniors, a junior and two sophomores. Garrett and Jordan were joined by Villanova junior Ryan Arcidiacono and seniors LaDontae Henton from Providence and Villanova’s Darrun Hilliard.

The Preseason All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention group includes three juniors: Butler guard Roosevelt Jones, St. John’s center Chris Obekpa and Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs.
