Game Preview

The Blue Demons welcome in the Drake Bulldogs to tip-off their 35th season at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 77-58 loss to Bowling Green in their season opener at home on Saturday. Freshman guard Reed Timmer led the way for the Bulldogs with 16 points and six assists in the losing effort. Timmer played all 40 minutes against Bowling Green. Sophomore center Jacob Enevold Jensen contributed with 10 points and five rebounds.

Drake coach Ray Giacoletti has a young team in his second year at the helm of the Bulldogs basketball program. Drake went 15-16 overall, 6-12 in the Missouri Valley Conference in his first season in Des Moines.

The Bulldogs are relying on a number of freshmen right now. Their freshmen scored 29 of their 58 points in Saturday’s loss. A couple of those freshmen are from Illinois. Freshman guard C.J. Rivers from Cahokia, Illinois, was a high school and AAU teammate of DePaul signee Raymond Doby. He grabbed a team high eight rebounds in the opener. Ore Arogundade comes to Drake from St. Viator in Chicago.

Timmer and Arogundade both started in Saturday’s game.

Drake will be playing without seniors Gary Ricks and Karl Madison who are both suspended for the first three games of the season for receiving improper benefits back in 2012.

Drake is ranked 263rd in Ken Pomeroy’s power rankings. The Bulldogs are projected to finish ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
