Beware the trap game. Beware. Beware.
Wednesday’s game against Lehigh has the earmarks of a trap game. DePaul is coming off of final exams and could just be looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown against the Stanford Cardinal.
Before facing Stanford though, the Blue Demon had better not look past Lehigh. Lehigh looks to be the best 0-4 team in the nation. The Mountain Hawks hung tough at 12th ranked Villanova in their season opener. Lehigh led Villanova 46-40 early in the second half before succumbing to the Wildcats in a 77-66 loss.
Despite the showing against Nova, Lehigh has somehow managed to lose their next three games.
“They’ve got a very good big kid,” DePaul coach Oliver Purnell told WSCR Radio. “I can see that they can really throw the ball inside and get a bucket, so we better get our doubling of the post ready. They’re a very athletic looking team and clearly not afraid to go on the road in the Big East and play big time opponents like Villanova. We need to gather ourselves coming out of exams and make sure we are ready to play.”
The big man that Purnell spoke of is Tim Kempton, who is the son of former Notre Dame and NBA forward Tim Kempton. Kempton, a 6-10 sophomore center, is leading Lehigh in both scoring and rebounding. He is averaging a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds per game through four games.
Lehigh’s second leading scorer is also familiar to DePaul fans – sophomore guard Austin Price is the younger brother of former Blue Demon Jodan Price. Austin is a perimeter shooter who is averaging 12 points per game for the Mountain Hawks.
Former Oswego High School guard Miles Simelton is averaging 2.8 ppg coming off the bench for Lehigh.
Wednesday night’s game will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Lehigh is currently ranked 251st in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings of college basketball teams.
Lehigh coach Brett Reed is in his eighth year at the helm of the Mountain Hawks program. He is 129-91 over eight seasons. Lehigh is coming off a season where they finished 14-18 overall and 7-11 in the Patriot League.
Lehigh is predicted to finish in seventh place in the Patriot League this season.
A key to the game for DePaul will be shooting from the perimeter. In the game against Villanova, Lehigh forced Nova to have to spread the floor and take outside shots, we’re very likely to see that happen again on Wednesday night.
