The Blue Demons are off to a 1-0 start in Big East play following their 61-58 victory over Marquette on New Year’s Eve.
Next DePaul will have a step up in competition with Xavier coming to town on Saturday.
The Musketeers are coming off a 70-53 win over 25th ranked Georgetown on New Year’s Eve.
When you look at the Xavier Musketeers, you see a team that has done very well at home in the confines of the Cintas Center, but has struggled away from home. Xavier has lost on the road at Auburn in double-overtime. The Musketeers have also lost to Long Beach State and UTEP on a neutral court.
Xavier is led in scoring by freshman forward Trevon Bluiett, who is averaging 12.6 points per game. Bluiett was scoring more earlier in the season, but has been hampered in recent games by illness. Bluiett went 0 for 6 and finished with just four points in the Georgetown game.
6-10, 270 lb. center Matt Stainbrook is the force in the paint for Xavier. Stainbrook is also averaging 12.6 ppg and is corralling 7.3 rebounds per game. Stainbrook also dealt with some illness during the game against Georgetown.
In the win over the Hoyas, sophomore forward Jalen Reynolds matched his career high of 17 points. Xavier is beginning to improve on the defensive end. They held the Hoyas to 36 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers.
Junior guard Remy Abell is a lockdown defender who is averaging 10.2 ppg.
Xavier is a very efficient scoring team that leads the Big East in both three point field goal percentage (39.7%) and overall field goal percentage (50.3%).
The Blue Demons were able to steal a win from Marquette by playing tough on the defensive end during the game’s final five minutes. If DePaul wants to gain a win over Xavier, they’re going to have to bring consistent defensive effort throughout the game, not just in a five minute stretch.
