Thanks to some great performances from Billy Garrett, Jr. and Forrest Robinson, DePaul (8-7, 2-0) managed to upset Xavier (10-4, 1-1).
Robinson scored a career-high of 17 points on six of 12 shooting.
“He’s never shy or not confident about shooting,” DePaul coach Oliver Purnell said of Robinson. “That’s his value. He stretches the floor and opens it up for Garrett to drive, it opens it up for us to throw the ball inside to Tommy (Hamilton) and Myke (Henry) some.”
Garrett managed to rack up a double-double with 15 points and matched a career-high of 10 assists.
“We made shots and big plays,” said Garrett, who was surprised to learn that he had a double-double. “We got stops when we needed them. We stayed together. They went on a couple runs and got a couple turnovers. We didn’t fold from that. It was nice to see that. It shows we are growing as a team.”
Xavier led by as much as nine points with 11:44 left in the first half. It was the Blue Demons defense in the second half that made the difference for them.
DePaul managed to really limit Xavier’s big men in the post. The Blue Demons held Musketeer center Matt Stainbrook to five points and forward Jalen Reynolds to six points.
“We made some adjustments,” Purnell said. “We kept changing the way we were playing the post entry pass. We doubled some quickly, we waited till they dribbled to double, and then we didn’t double at all.”
Once again DePaul was able to force 15 Musketeer turnovers.
DePaul senior Jamee Crockett scored 10 points and collected four rebounds. Myke Henry and Aaron Simpson added nine points apiece. Tommy Hamilton IV, who returned from a one game suspension, came in off the bench to contribute nine points.
Xavier was led by the play of freshman forward Trevon Bluiett, who finished with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Myles Davis chipped in with 14 points off the bench for the Musketeers.
The Blue Demons next head out on the road where they will face the Creighton Bluejays in Omaha, Nebraska on Wednesday night.
