DePaul (12-15, 6-8 ) shot 34 percent overall and their offense sputtered against the Providence (19-8, 9-5) zone in the second half, as the Friars dominated the Blue Demons 84-57.
Turnovers, especially early in the contest, turned out to be problematic for the Blue Demons. DePaul turned the ball over 16 times and the Friars scored 24 points off of Blue Demon turnovers.
“We didn’t respond well when we turned the ball over a few times,” said DePaul coach Oliver Purnell.
Providence point guard Kris Dunn has also been tough in both games that he’s played against the Blue Demons this season. After scoring a triple-double in the first meeting. Dunn followed up that performance with 21 points, four steals, and four rebounds, while going 11 of 12 from the free throw line tonight.
“He’s tough to guard, he’s long and athletic,” DePaul guard R.J. Curington said of Dunn. “I thought we had him pretty good at the beginning of the first half, but he’s a good player.”
Providence senior forward LaDontae Henton racked up a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Henton and Dunn form the top duo in the Big East conference.
“This is a hard team for us to match up with because of their physicality,” observed Purnell.
Ben Bentil also contributed a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Friars.
Billy Garrett, Jr. led the way for the Blue Demons with 11 points. Jamee Crockett added 10 points, and Curington came in off the bench to score 10 points, all of which came in the second half.
The Blue Demons next travel to the nation’s capital where they will face the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday night in a Big East matchup.
