Creighton Tops DePaul 75-62

In what was a game of runs, the Creighton Bluejays had the final run and outlasted DePaul 75-62 on Tuesday night at Allstate Arena.

Creighton (13-15, 4-11) started out the game strong, building a 15 point lead with 8:55 left in the first half.

DePaul (12-17, 6-10) then rallied to tie the game up at 43-43 with 12:11 to play, but could never turn the corner and open up a lead on the Bluejays.

The three point shots just weren’t falling for the Blue Demons tonight as they went two for 14 from beyond the arc in the first half. DePaul then opted to focus on taking the ball inside more in the second half, which was effective, but they didn’t get things done on the defensive end of the floor.

“We played much better offensively (in the second half), then our old bugaboo, our defensive rebounding let us down,” said DePaul coach Oliver Purnell.

The Blue Demons were outrebounded by a 38-22 margin in the loss. “We were taking bad shots, we weren’t finding people in transition, we were leaving shooters open, that’s just a recipe for disaster,” said senior forward Forrest Robinson.

It was the fifth straight loss for the Blue Demons.

For Creighton coach Greg McDermott, tonight’s victory was his 400th career win.

Creighton had three players finish in double-figures. James Milliken led all scorers with 18 points. Will Artino contributed with 13 points off the bench and Austin Chatman added 12 points.

Robinson led the way for DePaul with 14 points on six of seven shooting and five rebounds. Jamee Crockett chipped in with 13 points, while Rashaun Stimage came in off the bench to score 10 points and grab four rebounds.

The Blue Demons next host the 23rd ranked Butler Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Allstate Arena,

Note: DePaul paid tribute to former Blue Demon Dick Triptow who passed away this week. Triptow was a member of DePaul’s 1945 national championship team and also played in the NBA.
