DePaul (12-18, 6-11) had a six point lead with 14:35 to play in the second half, but Butler (21-8, 11-5) went on a 24-3 run over a six minute stretch in the second stanza to seal the victory.
It was the second straight season that Butler has spoiled things on DePaul’s Senior Day.
“I’m very disappointed we couldn’t get a win for our seniors today,” said DePaul coach Oliver Purnell.
Blue Demon senior Jamee Crockett had a strong performance on his Senior Day. Crockett led DePaul with 20 points on eight of 15 shooting.
“It’s my last home game, but at the end of the day, I have to treat it like any other game and try to get the win, but we didn’t come out with it,” said a dejected Crockett.
Crockett scored the first three pointer of the game which helped the Blue Demons break their all-time team record for three pointers in a season of 231 which was set by the 2007-08 DePaul team.
The difference in this game was on the boards. The Blue Demons were outworked and outhustled on the glass by a 36-19 margin.
“We stopped rebounding the ball,” Purnell said. “That really is the biggest thing. We can’t get outrebounded by that much on the boards. It’s hard to make it up. It shows up in different areas.”
Crockett was the only Blue Demon to reach double-figures. Myke Henry added nine points in the losing effort.
Butler guard Kellen Dunham led all scorers with 24 points on six of 11 from the field.
Guard Roosevelt Jones contributed with 16 points and Kameron Woods added 14 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Blue Demons now have a week off before they travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette for the final regular season game of the Big East season.
Former Blue Demon great and NBA Start Quentin Richardson was honored at halftime as he is being inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame today.
