Dave Leitao is looking for a few good men to help him turnaround the Blue Demons. On Monday, he talked about what he wants in an assistant coach.
“I’m looking for a group of people that can be leaders, that want to advance in this industry, and be great role models for our kids and for this community,” said Leitao. “They must be tireless, who want to be in here first and leaving last, that want to recruit good people to this program, and that can coach the game.”
Leitao said that he plans to talk with possible assistant coaches at this weekend’s Final Four in Indianapolis.
Among some of the possible candidates to join Dave Leitao’s staff at DePaul are:
Diener has been the head men’s basketball coach at Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee for six years. The Wolves finished the season this year ranked 17th in the nation in NAIA. In 2012-13, they won the NAIA national championship. Diener worked under Leitao as Director of Operations at Virginia for two years and as a Graduate Assistant at DePaul for one season.
Fuller recently left his post as Associate Head Coach at Missouri. He worked alongside Leitao on Frank Haith’s staff at Mizzou. He was named one of college basketball's Top 10 assistant coaches under the age of 40 by ESPN.com. He has a reputation as a good national recruiter
Marshall played for Leitao at Connecticut in the early 90’s. He served under Leitao as an assistant coach with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Developmental League for one season. He is now an assistant coach at Rider.
Lanier worked for Leitao at Virginia. He was recently on Rick Barnes’ staff at Texas. It’s quite possible that he follows Barnes to Tennessee, however.
Coleman has recruited the Chicago area extensively. “Coach Chin” is currently looking for work after Geno Ford’s staff was dismissed at Bradley recently.
Moore is available after recently being fired as the head coach at UIC. He was responsible for recruiting many of the players on the Wisconsin Badgers team that has made back-to-back trips to the Final Four.
A former DePaul assistant coach under Joey Meyer. He’s well known for his ties to his family’s Mac Irvin Fire AAU program in Chicago.
The former George Washington head coach is now an assistant coach at Connecticut. He’d bring some head coach experience to Leitao’s staff.
Another former head coach who has returned to the UConn staff. Miller was an Ivy League head coach for 10 seasons at Brown and Penn.
A former Blue Demon great, who just finished a very successful season as a high school coach at DePaul Prep on Chicago’s northside. He has strong ties to the Illinois Wolves AAU program.
