Decision Looms for Marcus LoVett

Morgan Park High School guard Marcus LoVett is the best available senior in the state of Illinois. The 5-11 point guard is expected to choose where he will play college ball soon. In this report, we talk with Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin to gain some insight into LoVett’s decision.

Marcus LoVett is a Scout.com 4-star prospect in the class of 2015. He’s considered to be one of the top five available point guards for the Spring signing period. Lovett is ranked 92nd overall in Scout.com’s rankings for 2015 and is the 14th best point guard in the nation.

LoVett has been deciding between offers from DePaul, Illinois, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and St. John’s.

So where does Lovett stand with his decision?

“He doesn’t really know,” said Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin. “He’s all over the place with it. He’s just trying to make a good decision and stick to it. He wants a home-like atmosphere. He just wants to make a good sound choice of where he’s going.”

LoVett moved to Chicago from the west coast for his senior season. Early on it looked like he would remain in Illinois for college, but more recently Lovett indicated that St. John’s might be his favorite.

“When he first came here it was all about the state schools – Illinois and DePaul,” Irvin said. “He wants to call this home. That was his first mindset. Then a lot of schools came in with interest and now he doesn’t have that mindset. That was his first goal, his father says ‘stay close to home’. Whatever he does, I will support him.”

LoVett has yet to take an official visit to any schools. He took the ACT standardized test on April 18th and is waiting on his test score. What Lovett decides to do next could depend on when a qualifying test score arrives.

“He could be making a decision in the next couple days or next week,” Irvin said.

In the meantime, LoVett has played ball on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit in April with the Dream Vision AAU program.

LoVett’s decision could come down to who is recruiting him the hardest.

Last weekend, DePaul coach Dave Leitao and assistant coach Billy Garrett, Jr. were front and center in Indianapolis for the LoVett’s games with Dream Vision and would like to be the choice when LoVett decides.
