Game Preview

The Blue Demons play their one and only exhibition game against the Caldwell Cougars on Saturday.

Caldwell University is a Division II school located in Caldwell, New Jersey.   The Cougars are coming off a season where they finished 15-13 overall and 11-8 in conference play.

Caldwell coach Mark Corino is in his 28th year at the helm of the program.  He has notched 521 career victories.

Corino likes to schedule Division I opponents in the preseason to toughen up his team as they get ready for the coming regular season.

He often schedules in-state schools like Seton Hall and Rutgers as early opponents.

Last season, the Cougars lost 96-68 at Seton Hall.

This year though, Corino has decided to take his team to the Midwest to face Notre Dame and DePaul.

The Cougars were defeated 81-56 by the 18th ranked Fighting Irish in South Bend on Thursday night.

Caldwell’s two leading returning scorers are Dawan Lighty and Billy McDonald.  Lighty, a 6-2 guard, averaged 15 points and 2.4 rebounds per game last season along with a team-high 24 steals, while knocking down a team-best 53 three pointers. McDonald, a 6-6 forward, averaged 13.4 points and 4.2 rebounds, while shooting 49.1% from the field.

In Thursday’s game at Notre Dame, Lighty led the team in scoring and rebounding with 15 points and seven boards, and went three for six from beyond the arc.  While McDonald scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Cougars have one Chicago-area player on the roster – sophomore guard Treston Forbes who was all-conference while at St. Rita High School in Chicago.
