Game Preview

After spending the two last weeks on the road, DePaul (3-3) opens up the Rosemont portion of their home schedule at Allstate Arena on Saturday with Chicago State.

It’s difficult to judge this Chicago State team and determine which Cougars team will show up on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars are 3-5, but have yet to beat a Division I team.   They were certainly close to winning some though.  Chicago State lost three games in a row by a total of seven points.  That’s including the heartbreaking 82-79 loss at Illinois where CSU lost on a buzzer beating 3-pointer courtesy of Jalen Coleman-Lands. The Cougars blew a 14 point lead that they had held in the first half over the Illini.

CSU is coming off a 80-58 loss at Northern Illinois on Wednesday night.

The Cougars are being led in scoring by junior college transfer Elliott Cole at 15 points per game.  Cole is a streaky perimeter shooter who can be dangerous when he is on a hot streak.  He likes to stay outside. Case and point, Cole has taken more than two-thirds of his shots from outside the arc this season.  He’s shooting 40.9 percent from three point territory.

6-2 senior guard Kieran Woods is helping Cole out in the backcourt by averaging 13.9 ppg.

6-5 junior swingman Trayvon Palmer is contributing with 12.3 ppg and 8.6 rebounds per game.

Former DePaul assistant Tracy Dildy is now in his sixth season as head coach at CSU.  Despite the record of 45-122, Dildy has actually done a good job given what little resources he has to work with at Chicago State.

For Dildy to have his team within three points of victory at Illinois this season is nothing short of amazing, especially when you consider that CSU only won eight games last year and finished in seventh place in the Western Athletic Conference.

Dildy is good at motivating his players, especially for local rivalries. He will have his guys ready for DePaul on Saturday.  Whether they can pull off a win still remains to be seen.  Chicago State has never beaten the Blue Demons and are 0-13 all-time against DePaul.

The Last Time

On December 4, 2015, at the Jones Convocation Center on Chicago’s southside, the Blue Demons routed the Cougars by a 84-60 margin.   DePaul was led by the performance of sophomore Tommy Hamilton IV with a career high of 25 points on a perfect seven for seven shooting, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block.

The Blue Demons had four players finish in double-figures. Myke Henry scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Billy Garrett, Jr. and Aaron Simpson scored 11 points apiece. Darrick Wood came in off the bench to contribute eight points and six rebounds.

The Blue Demons outrebounded CSU by a 36-28 margin in the win and shot 52.4 percent from the field while holding the Cougars to 36.8 percent shooting.

Clarke Rosenberg led the way for Chicago State with 20 points.
