Eli Cain Picks Up Big East Rookie of the Week Honors

CHICAGO – DePaul freshman Eli Cain was named the Big East Rookie of Week after averaging 15.5 points and shooting .706 from the field in wins over UIC and Chicago State. The New Jersey native is the first Rookie of the Week for the Blue Demons since the 2013-14 season.

Cain’s 15.5 points per game led the Blue Demons during the week while he went 12-for-17 (.706) from the field. Those numbers also included a 4-of-6 (.667) effort from behind the arc and he added a total of seven rebounds and four assists in the two games.

The freshman opened the week with 11 points at UIC while grabbing four rebounds with an assist and a steal. On Saturday, he recorded his first 20-point game with a team-high 20 against Chicago State. He added three rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot in 28 minutes while going 8-of-11 from the field.

Butler’s Kellen Dunham was the Player of the Week while the league’s weekly honor roll consisted of Bradley Hayes from Georgetown, Marquette’s Luke Fischer, Ben Bentil of Providence, Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono and Trevon Bluiett from Xavier.

Cain is the first Big East Rookie of the Week winner for DePaul since the 2013-14 season that saw R.J. Curington, Billy Garrett Jr. and Tommy Hamilton IV all claim the award at least once. Garrett was named the top weekly rookie five times while Curington and Hamilton were recognized once each.

DePaul has won three straight games and travels to Drake for a Wednesday night game in Des Moines. The game can be seen on ESPN3 and heard on WIND 560 AM starting at 7 p.m.
