Game Preview

For DePaul to end their three game losing streak they are going to have to beat a very good ranked team in the GW Colonials on Tuesday night.

To accomplish that feat, the Blue Demons will have to play near flawless basketball.  They will have to not turnover the ball, do well on the boards, shoot great from the perimeter and get after the Colonials on the defensive end.

George Washington is 10-1 with their only loss coming to 24th ranked Cincinnati in Brooklyn, NY last month.  GW sports wins over sixth ranked Virginia, Tennessee, Seton Hall, and Rutgers.

The only common opponent between GW and DePaul is Penn State.  DePaul lost to Penn State on the road by a 68-62 margin, while the Colonials defeated Penn State 76-66 in Washington, DC.

After struggling in his first two seasons at GW, Colonials head coach Mike Lonergan has his team on the right path with appearances in the NCAA tournament and the NIT in the last two seasons.  Now in his fifth year, he has his team ranked in the top 20 and looks like one of the favorites to win the Atlantic 10 conference.

George Washington is led in scoring by Wake Forest transfer Tyler Cavanaugh. The 6-9 forward is averaging 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

George Washington has always seemed to draw talent from overseas.  This team is no exception.

Argentian swingman Patricio Garino is contributing 13.2 ppg.  Garino shot eight of nine in last year’s win over DePaul.

Cavanaugh and Garino also happen to be the team’s only threats from three point territory. Garino is averaging 56 percent while shooting from beyond the arc.  Cavanaugh is shooting 48.4 percent from the perimeter.

Senior forward  Kevin Larson came to GW from Denmark and is chipping in with 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

Needless to say, GW is very strong in the frontcourt.

The Colonials are coming off a 87-74 win at home over St. Peters.  Cavanaugh led the way for GW with 18 points.

Larsen reached a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Garino chipped in with 16 points and Paul Jorgensen added 12 points.

The Blue Demons better be properly motivated if they want to beat a top 20 team in Rosemont on Tuesday night.

The Last Time

On December 11, 2014 in the nation’s capital, George Washington handed DePaul a 81-68 defeat.

Patricio Garino scored 19 points while shooting eight of nine from the field and also picked up five steals.  Kevin Larsen and Joe McDonald scored 18 points apiece. Larsen also grabbed eight rebounds. The Colonials shot 57.1 percent overall.

DePaul’s Myke Henry led all scorers with 22 points to go along with six rebounds.

Blue Demon senior Jamee Crockett contributed 16 points and Billy Garrett Jr. added 10 points and four assists.
