DePaul Upsets No. 20 George Washington

The Blue Demons cut down 20th ranked George Washington on Tuesday night much the way their namesake chopped down a cherry tree.

DePaul (6-6) wrapped up non-conference play with a 82-61 win over George Washington (10-2) at Allstate Arena.

It was a game where the Blue Demons never trailed and everything seemed to go right for them.

DePaul got off on the right foot with a 10-0 start before the Colonials knew what hit them.

“I thought for us coming out of the gate really well on defense and really locking in and following our game plan which led to missed shots and turnovers,” said DePaul coach Dave Leitao.  “They had to play from behind and it was an uphill climb from there.”

DePaul shut down GW forward Patricio Garino, who went zero for eight from the field tonight.  Garino had scored 19 points against DePaul last season.

The Blue Demons held the Colonials to 33.3 percent shooting overall and 14.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

The highlight of the night was a posterizing dunk that Myke Henry slammed home in the first half that also resulted in a technical foul call on Henry.

“Oh my God, ridiculous, that was sensational,” Aaron Simpson said of Henry’s dunk.

Four Blue Demons finished in double-figures in a game that featured unselfish play and balanced scoring.  Billy Garrett, Jr. led all scorers with 20 points and also dished out seven assists.  Freshman guard Eli Cain scored 16 points.  Simpson chipped in with 15 points, while Henry reached a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Demons outrebounded the Colonials by a 37-26 margin.

George Washington was led by 17 points from forward Kevin Larsen and 14 points from forward Tyler Cavanaugh.

The Blue Demons now will have a one week break for the Christmas holiday before returning to Allstate Arena on December 30th to open the Big East conference season against the Georgetown Hoyas.
