DePaul Blue Demons vs. Marquette Golden Eagles – Saturday, February 20th, 1 p.m. Central – Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Illinois
Television – FOX Sports Networks, The U Too Chicago
Radio – WSCR AM 670
That’s the one word that is on DePaul players’ minds as they prepare for Saturday’s game. Sweep. An opportunity to sweep their rival from Milwaukee in their season series.
Revenge is the one word on the mind of Marquette’s players as they look to avenge their 57-56 loss to DePaul on January 20th in Milwaukee.
The Golden Eagles have had some time to think about that revenge too. They’ve been off preparing for DePaul, since Saturday’s 65-62 loss to Creighton in Milwaukee.
No doubt Marquette will bring their fans down from Milwaukee to Rosemont in an effort to fuel their revenge.
Once again the Blue Demons will have to contend with former McDonald’s All-American and almost certain 2016 NBA lottery pick Henry Ellenson in Saturday’s game.
Ellenson is the favorite for the Big East newcomer of the year award and is fourth in the league in scoring at 16.6 points per game right now. Henry is also tied for first in the Big East in rebounding with Angel Delgado at 10 boards per game.
For DePaul to have a chance at winning this one, they will have to do what they did well in the first meeting with Marquette. That is a solid defensive effort and to outhustle Marquette for rebounds.
If they can do that and get big games from Myke Henry and Billy Garrett, Jr. again, then DePaul can get out their brooms to earn a sweep.
The Last Time
On January 20, 2016 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, the Blue Demons secured their first Big East win of the season by handing their rivals from Marquette a 57-56 loss.
Trailing 56-54 with 1.1 seconds remaining DePaul’s Billy Garrett, Jr. drove the lane for a layup and drew a foul. Garrett then went to the free throw line to successfully knock down the game winning free throw for the Blue Demons.
Marquette then failed to get a shot off on the ensuing possession.
Garrett was held scoreless in the first half, but came up big when it mattered in crunch time. Billy ended up with 14 points on the night.
Myke Henry led the way for DePaul with a double-double performance of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Marquette’s Duane Wilson came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19 points. DePaul held Marquette’s leading scorer Henry Ellenson to 11 points.
The Blue Demons outworked and outhustled Marquette on the glass and outrebounded the Golden Eagles by a 33-26 margin.
