DePaul (8-18, 2-12) was short staffed today with two starters sidelined due to injuries. Billy Garrett, Jr. sat out the game due to a strained right calf that he picked up in Wednesday’s game at St. John’s. Center Peter Ryckbosch was sidelined for a knee injury. Both players are day-to-day going forward.
“I could take it structurally and say that we missed the guy at the most important position on the floor,” DePaul coach Dave Leitao said of Garrett’s absence. “At the same point in time, in basketball or any sport, it’s the next man up. It’s an opportunity for guys who have said they want a bigger role. We did not have enough guys who were better versions of themselves today. We didn’t have that for enough stretches in the game and it cost us.”
If that wasn’t bad enough, Myke Henry was limited due to foul trouble throughout the game. Henry played just 20 minutes and was held to eight points and three rebounds.
Without Garrett in the lineup, turnovers were an issue for the Demons. Marquette (17-10, 6-8) scored 18 points off of 16 DePaul turnovers.
The lone bright spot for DePaul today was the play of Tommy Hamilton IV. Hamilton scored 20 points on seven of 13 shooting from the floor and grabbed six rebounds.
Freshman Eli Cain added eight points and dished out five assists in Garrett’s absence.
Rashaun Stimage helped on the boards with nine rebounds and also scored seven points in the losing effort for the Demons.
Marquette had four players finish in double figures. Haanif Cheatham led all scorers with 20 points. Luke Fischer contributed 16 points. Freshman phenom Henry Ellenson scored 14 points and also had nine rebounds. Jujaun Johnson added 10 points for the Golden Eagles.
DePaul will next host the St. John’s Red Storm on Thursday night at Allstate Arena.
