DePaul Lands 4-Star Point Guard for 2017

On Monday afternoon, DePaul coach Dave Leitao got his man.

Indianapolis Pike point guard Justin Roberts had been the Blue Demons top priority for the class of 2017 throughout the Spring recruiting period on the Nike EYBL Grassroots basketball circuit.

After visiting the DePaul campus and viewing the construction of DePaul’s new arena on Sunday, Roberts pulled the trigger on Monday afternoon and verbally committed to Leitao.

“I thought it was the right fit for me and my family,” said Roberts.  “I met with Coach Dave and he was saying all the right things.  “I could tell that he was very genuine. What he has planned for the Blue Demons in the future, I just want to be a part of that.”

Roberts saw in DePaul an opportunity to be a key part of a new era at DePaul’s new arena in 2017.

“Billy Garrett, Jr. will be leaving, so I’ll be coming in and most likely starting as a freshman and playing in the Big East conference in a new stadium, I want to be part of all of that,” said Justin.

Garrett’s father, Billy Garrett, Sr., who is also from Indianapolis, had been recruiting Roberts for quite awhile.

“Coach Garrett was talking about how his son feels about Coach Dave and how his son feels about the university and he hit with me and my Dad,” said Roberts.

Leitao sees Roberts as the cornerstone of a rebuilt DePaul basketball program.

“Coach Dave said that he could trust me with the program, not just the team, but the whole program,” said Roberts. “I just felt like he believed in me.”

The 5-11, 165 lb. guard chose DePaul over offers from Dayton and Bradley.  He was starting to receive interest from Butler, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, and Xavier.

Roberts gives the Blue Demons their first commitment for the class of 2017.  DePaul has three scholarships remaining that could be used for that class.
