Game Preview

Former DePaul assistant coach Tracy Dildy has one of the toughest coaching jobs in Division I basketball.  He’s had to deal with drastic cuts in state of Illinois funding due to budgetary issues in Springfield and has been forced to run his team on a shoestring budget.

Dildy’s job got even tougher in July when he was named Interim Athletic Director at CSU as well. Now he has two tough jobs.

The Cougars are coming of a season where they finished 4-28.  Only one of their wins (Western Illinois) came against Division I competition.

Yet Dildy keeps grinding away at his job, working tirelessly to elevate the CSU program.

The Cougars are off to a 3-7 start this season.  Once again, their only Division I win has come against Western Illinois.

Despite his situation, Dildy hasn’t been the least bit afraid of scheduling against some of the best teams in the country.  The Cougars have suffered losses at Notre Dame, Wisconsin, St. Louis, and Northwestern.

After all of that, it looks like Dildy’s fortunes are starting to turn for the better.  Following a two point loss at St. Louis earlier in the week, the Cougars went into Evanston on Wednesday night and walked away with a four point loss to the Northwestern Wildcats.

It looks like things are starting to click for CSU.

Fred Sims, Jr. scored 22 pts. at Northwestern, while going seven of 13 from three point range.

Trayvon Palmer recorded a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Anthony Eaves came in off the bench to score 12 points for the Cougars.

Saturday’s game is part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic tournament.  Chicago State and DePaul will be playing in different brackets in Las Vegas beginning on December 22nd.

The Last Time

On December 5, 2015 at Allstate Arena, DePaul overcame a slow start to take down Chicago State 96-72.

DePaul senior Myke Henry gave the Blue Demons a 27-25 lead on a layup with 8:53 remaining in the first half.  Following Henry’s basket, DePaul never trailed again.

The Blue Demons had six players finish in double-figures and were led by a career-high scoring effort from freshman Eli Cain with 20 points.

Junior guard Billy Garrett, Jr. added 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Tommy Hamilton IV came in off the bench to score 13 points and seven rebounds

before he was ejected in the second half following a flagrant two foul call for swinging his elbows.

Henry contributed 13 points, while Aaron Simpson scored 11.  R.J. Curington chipped in with 10 points, including two 3-pointers while coming off the bench.

The Blue Demons held Chicago State guard Elliott Cole to nine points.  Fred Sims, Jr. led all scorers with 22 points, while Jawal Adekoya scored 17 in the losing effort for the Cougars.

DePaul held CSU to 26.7 percent shooting in the second half and 35.2 percent for the game.

The Blue Demons also scored 23 points off of Cougar turnovers.
