DePaul Recruiting Roundup: 2017 & 2018 Recruit Update

March Madness is around the corner for the High School Hoops season, and this year, the current crop of DePaul recruits, possibly more than ever before, are all having strong years, and more importantly, all are leaders on really good High School teams. We'll be keeping an eye on them as they progress through their playoff games.

6'3" 2G John Diener (2018) average 21.6 points per game for Cedarburg High during the regular season, which concluded last weekend.  Diener is only a junior and already holds the school's all-time scoring record.  Cedarburg finished 20-2 and will be one of the favorites in Division 2 (2nd biggest school section) in Wisconsin.  They are ranked #4 in Division 2.  They begin regional play as the #2 seed in Division 2, Section 2, on Friday March 3rd.  Next round will be the following evening March 4.  Both games will be at Cedarburg High. Cedarburg's only 2 losses were to Division 1 teams, as they finished with a perfect record in their conference. But they are in a very tough sectional, with most likely games against ranked teams #9 Brown Deer and #3 Beaver Dam very early on in the bracket.

6'10" C Jaylen Butz (2017) and the #1 ranked team in 4A in Indiana (biggest school division) Fort Wayne North Side (21-2), begin sectional play on Tuesday Feb 28 against DeKalb High at Carroll High in Fort Wayne. The game will be live-streamed on Summit Sports, as will all the games in this sectional.  Sectional play for round 2 will be on Friday March 3rd, with the Sectional 5 championship to be held on Saturday March 4th.  The first 2 games in this sectional should be smooth sailing, but the sectional championship will be a tough match as they probably will face Fort Wayne Snider, one of only 2 teams to have beaten North Side this year.  Snider features 7'0" PF Malik Williams, who is a Louisville signee. Jaylen averaged 19 points and over 13 rebounds a game during the regular season, and had a stellar performance in his last game, scoring 25 points and grabbing 16 rebounds against one of the top schools in Indiana in South Bend Riley.  His stats are more impressive considering that he shares the spotlight with 6'8" Keion Brooks, a 5-star sophomore who averages 22 points a game and considered to be one of the top 15 players in the country for his class.

6'8" SF/PF Paul Reed (2017) and his Wekiva High (25-5) team have made it to the Florida State 9A (biggest school division) Championships to be played in Lakeland, Florida.  They will be facing the top-ranked team in the state in 9A in South Miami High in the semifinals on Friday March 3rd. South Miami features guard Zack Dawson, who is an Oklahoma State signee. The game will be live-streamed on the NFHS Network.  If they make it to the finals, the game will be live streamed on Spectrum Sports. Wekiva is currently ranked #6 in 9A.  They went through a very tough playoff schedule to get here, with each team that they beat at one point or another a state-ranked team during the year.  Paul had a monster game his last game, with coincidentally the same stats as Jaylen Butz, 25 points and 16 rebounds in the Regional Finals against Oviedo.  For the regular season, Paul averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks a game on a team with a very balanced lineup of scorers.

6'0" PG Justin Roberts (2017) and his Las Vegas Findlay Prep school concludes regular season play this Tuesday.  As of last week, they were 27-3.  Justin averaged 11.6 points and 4.5 assists per game for a talented and deep team full of superstars, with most of the games being blowouts. (Justin averaged only around 20 minutes a game).  Their next foray in the playoffs will be at the Dick's Sports Nationals in New York starting March 31st.  Roberts is rated as a 4-star point guard on Scout.com.

Butz, Reed, and Roberts will join transfers Austin Grandstaff and Max Strus to form the 2017 recruiting class for the Blue Demons.
