DePaul Blue Demons (9-21, 2-15) vs. Xavier Musketeers (18-12, 8-9) – Saturday, March 4th, 1:00 p.m. Central – Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Illinois
Television – FOX Sports Networks and the U-TOO in Chicago
Radio – WSCR AM 670
The Xavier Musketeers come into Saturday’s game having lost six straight. They haven’t won a game since defeating DePaul back on February 8th.
After seeming like a virtual lock to make the NCAA tournament and being ranked in the top 25 just a few weeks ago, Xavier now finds themselves on the NCAA Tournament bubble and in desperate need of a win.
This game will be the first of two back-to-back games between the two teams. DePaul will also face Xavier in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. Central.
While the Musketeers did have star player Trevon Bluiett go down with a right ankle injury for a couple of games in the middle of their losing streak, Bluiett is back now and scored 15 points in Wednesday’s loss to Marquette at home.
So, it’s difficult to explain why the Musketeers haven’t been able to snap their losing skid.
"We haven't had much of a resiliency all year," Xavier coach Chris Mack said following the loss to Marquette. "When teams punch us in the mouth, we just keep getting punched. That hasn't been the character of teams I've coached in the past. This one has been dealt some weird adversity throughout the year and we haven't handled it very well - you know, runs that the other team makes, responses that we need to make - but we have an opportunity to try to get better at it and fix it on Saturday."
DePaul would like to play the role of the spoiler by defeating Xavier and send their senior class out with a win and close out the Allstate Arena era in style with one final victory in the old building.
Seniors R.J. Curington, Billy Garrett, Jr., Chris Harrison-Docks, Peter Ryckbosch, and Darrick Wood will be honored during the Senior Day ceremonies. Team managers Jake Gatziolis and Garrett Zavesky will also be recognized.
For this writer, everything is coming full circle on Saturday. The first DePaul game that I attended as a freshman at DePaul University was the Rosemont Horizon opener vs. Gonzaga on December 1st, 1980. I don’t have a lot of memories from that game other than that the Blue Demons won 74-56. NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton played for the Bulldogs in that game, but didn’t do anything remarkable. At that point Stockton was a freshman who averaged just 3.1 points per game that season.
DePaul had a good run for many years at the Rosemont Horizon / Allstate Arena. We look back on some of the memorable moments of those 37 seasons in the below stories…
It’s the end of an era in Rosemont. DePaul will start a new one in November as they open the season at Wintrust Arena in Chicago’s South Loop. So long to Rosemont, it’s been fun.
The Last Time
On February 8, 2017 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, the Musketeers defeated DePaul 72-61.
Trevon Bluiett led Xavier with 20 points along with seven rebounds. He was 8-for-18 from the field and 4-for-8 from 3-point range. RaShid Gaston contributed 14 points, while JP Macura added 13.
DePaul's Brandon Cyrus was the surprise performer of the night. The freshman wing scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Eli Cain contributed 15 points on six of 14 shooting.
