Sarah Kustok Joins DePaul Coaching Staff

Former DePaul Women's Basketball captain Sarah Kustok has been tapped to join Coach Doug Bruno's coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Sarah Kustok was a guard for the DePaul Blue Demons from 2000 to 2004. "We're very excited about having Sarah join the staff," said Bruno.

An opening on the DePaul staff was created when assistant coach Maggie Dixon left for the head coaching job at the U.S. Military Academy on Oct. 11th. Bruno wasted no time in turning to his former player. "We do nothing but wish (Dixon) the best and support her in that decision to take that job," expressed Bruno. "It was unnatural that it happened after the season started. Anytime that happens you really have to be careful of allowing your players to be in a state of anxiety over who's going to replace that person. Our players were very justifiably sad to see Maggie go. But, they also were very, very genuinely excited about seeing who's behind door number one – that being Sarah Kustok. It transitioned us very smoothly from the loss a great and talented coach like Maggie, without having to put the kids through the duress of the unknown for a couple weeks and getting to know someone new."

Bruno sees Kustok as being the perfect fit for the job. "Sarah knows our system," Doug remarked. "Sarah knows our players. Sarah is unquestionably one of the greatest captain's DePaul's ever had as a leader. She's been totally selfless as a player, totally selfless as a leader, totally into what's best for the basketball team. She knows how we teach. She knows what we teach."

Kustok, an Orland Park, Illinois native, will put her Chicago area roots to use immediately. "She knows the Chicago area," observed Bruno. "She's very popular in the Chicago area as she begins to recruit here in the next weeks and months."

Practice got underway for the Blue Demons on October 15th and Kustok has already made a mark on the program. "She's a tireless worker," Doug stated. "She's been demonstrating a work ethic already that is magnificent."

Kustok finished her playing career ranked seventh on the all-time three point field goal list at DePaul. She is fourth in all-time three point field goal percentage.

Sarah joins assistant coaches Candis Blankson, Samantha Williams, and Director of Operations Jana Mathis on the DePaul staff.
