BIG EAST EXTENDS COMMISSIONER TRANGHESE'S CONTRACT;
GEORGETOWN PRESIDENT DEGIOIA NAMED CHAIR OF PRESIDENTS
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Chief Executive Officers of the BIG EAST Conference's 16 institutions have extended the contract of Commissioner Michael Tranghese through the 2009-10 academic year.
In addition, the BIG EAST also named Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia Chair of the BIG EAST Executive Committee, which has been expanded to six members. David C. Hardesty of West Virginia University will serve as Vice Chairman. The other members of the committee are Dr. Judy Genshaft of the University of South Florida, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. of the University of Notre Dame, Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J. of Marquette University and immediate Past Chair Mark Nordenberg of the University of Pittsburgh.
The decisions were made at the league's annual Presidents Meeting, which was held in Philadelphia, Pa. on Nov. 1. The meeting was the first time that all 16 Chief Executive Officers of the BIG EAST officially assembled since the league formally expanded this past July.
"The BIG EAST Conference Presidents and Chancellors were unanimously supportive of Michael and his leadership abilities," said Nordenberg. "Michael's guidance and resolve over the past several years have been invaluable to our recent expansion efforts, our relationship with the Bowl Championship Series and to our member schools. We have every confidence in his skills and look forward to working with him in the years ahead."
All appointments are effective immediately.
The BIG EAST is the largest and most diverse Division I conference in the country. It was formed in 1979 and represents the athletic interests of 16 member institutions including the University of Cincinnati, University of Connecticut, DePaul University, Georgetown University, University of Louisville, Marquette University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh, Providence College, Rutgers University, St. John's University, Seton Hall University, University of South Florida, Syracuse University, Villanova University and West Virginia University. The BIG EAST Conference has captured 25 national championships in six different sports and is a founding member of the Bowl Championship Series.
