Blue Demons Cruise Past St. Xavier 110-65

The 19th ranked DePaul Blue Demons women's basketball team posted a 110-65 exhibition game victory over the St. Xavier Cougars on Saturday night at the DePaul Athletic Center in Chicago. Six Demons finished in double figures and all thirteen players made it into the scoring column.

The two biggest questions surrounding DePaul going into tonight's game were: - Would Khara Smith play after sitting out practice with plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the bottom of the foot? - Who would DePaul Coach Doug Bruno start at the point guard slot due to the loss of Jenni Dant to graduation?

Smith continued to sit out. She returned to practice on Thursday, but will not likely return to the lineup until the regular season begins on November 18th. Caprice Smith (no relation) started at center in place of Khara Smith. Caprice pounded the boards coming up with 9 rebounds.

Missy Mitidiero got the nod to start at point guard. Mitidiero scored six to close out the first half. Rachael Carney came off the bench to relieve Mitidiero.

The Demons trailed early until going on a nine point scoring streak to jump out to a 13-7 lead. DePaul never trailed again. The Blue Demons pressure defense forced turnovers during the run.

This game marked the debut of freshman Erin Cattell. Cattell finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

St. Xavier's Jackie Heine led all scorers at half-time with 17 despite turning an ankle at one point. DePaul's Allie Quigley had 13 at half-time.

Doug Bruno went deep into his bench playing all 13 players in the first half. Bruno utilized wholesale substitutions where he brought in 5 players at a time.

The Blue Demons dominated the boards by outrebounding the Cougars 57 to 37.

DePaul turned up a notch on defense in the second half and held Heine to just one point in the second half.

Next the Blue Demons get ready to take on the Chicago Challengers in an exhibition game next Saturday. The Challengers feature a number of DePaul alumni.

Miscellaneous Game Note: This game featured some "wardrobe malfunction" as both Cattell's and Mitidiero's names were misspelled on their new uniforms.
