#16 Blue Demons Bounce Northern Illinois

CHICAGO - The DePaul women's basketball team didn't show any ill effects from playing their second game in three days as they knocked off visiting Northern Illinois, 89-46, on Monday night at the DePaul Athletic Center. The win was the 28th straight at home for the Blue Demons.

DePaul didn't waste any time as they sprinted to a 10-0 less than four minutes into the game. NIU's Nikita Odom ended the game-opening run as she gathered a Northern Illinois miss and hit a jumper in the lane.

With a 20-8 lead, the Blue Demons went scoreless for nearly four minutes before Caprice Smith found Allie Quigley for a lay-up and Khara Smith followed on DePaul's next possession with a short jumper to push the advantage to 24-9 with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Following another Quigley bucket, Jennifer Uptmor hit a running jumper to end the brief Blue Demon run for a 26-11 lead by the home team. Northern Illinois (2-5) closed the deficit to 11 points before the Blue Demons opened up a 33-16 advantage with five points from Quigley and a pair of free throws by Jenna Rubino.

The first-half lead grew to 20 points just before halftime as Caprice Smith hit DePaul's fifth three-pointer of the first half for a 41-21 advantage. The Huskies were able to hit one more bucket in the final minute for a score of 41-23 at intermission.

DePaul (9-1) opened the second half with eight straight points to open up a 26-point lead at 49-23. The Blue Demons spread the wealth with consecutive baskets by Claudette Towers, Rubino, Khara Smith and Quigley.

Holly Medley's two free throws with fewer than seven minutes left in the game gave DePaul their largest lead at 45 points. The Blue Demons knocked down 15-of-16 attempts from the line.

Quigley led all scorers and matched her season-high with 23 points. Rubino added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists while Khara Smith and Suzanne Morrison chipped in 10 points each. Smith also grabbed seven boards with three assists, two steals and a blocked shot in just 22 minutes of action. Morrison finished with a season-high six rebounds to go along with her top scoring effort of the season.

DePaul closes the three-game homestand on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against Saint Francis (Pa.). Next week, the Blue Demons take the short road trips to Loyola-Chicago on Dec. 20 and Northwestern on Dec. 22.

Game Notes: The Blue Demons hit a season-high eight three's for the fourth time… DePaul posted the 28th consecutive win at home and 14th straight win over opponents from the state of Illinois… the program has also won 28 of the last 29 and 34 of the last 36 against state schools… during the 28-game home-floor win streak, DePaul's average margin of victory is 27.2 points per game… Allie Quigley's 23 points marked the 10th game of her career with at least 20 points… the team is 29-for-32 (.906) from the line in the last two games… DePaul leads the all-time series, 27-7, and has won the last 12 meetings… the Blue Demons are also 49-12 all-time against teams from the Mid-American Conference.
