Smith's 29 Points Leads DePaul Past Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Twenty-nine points for the second straight game from Khara Smith led DePaul over Marquette, 67-52, on Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center. The win was a season-high eighth straight for the Blue Demons as Smith added 10 rebounds for her 65th career double-double.

Following a Marquette basket by Krystal Ellis, Quigley hit two jumpers followed by a three-point play by Khara Smith for a 7-2 Blue Demon advantage. The Golden Eagles scored the next five points to tie the game before Erin Carney knocked down a driving jumper off the glass with 16:12 left in the first half.

Carney's basket opened a 14-0 run that saw the Blue Demons hold Marquette scoreless for nearly seven minutes. DePaul spread the wealth as four different players scored during the run.

Smith's second three-point play of the half gave the Blue Demons a commanding 28-11 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. The score stood for the largest DePaul lead of the first period at 17 points.

The final five minutes didn't see much offense as Marquette outscored DePaul, 5-2, for a 30-17 halftime advantage for the Blue Demons.

DePaul (15-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 21-point lead at 40-19 on a Quigley jumper with 16 minutes left in the game. The Blue Demons didn't waste any time building the 20-point lead as they knocked down six of their first nine shots to start the second period.

Marquette went on a 9-2 run midway through the second half to cut the deficit to 14 points. Ellis led the charge for the Golden Eagles and trimmed the DePaul lead to 54-40 with 6:10 left in the game on a running jumper.

Over the final six minutes, the two teams traded baskets as Smith led DePaul with six of the final 11 points. Marquette would get as close as 15 points with the final score falling at 67-52 in favor of the Blue Demons.

Smith's 29 points and 10 rebounds led the Blue Demons while Quigley dropped in 14 points. Jenna Rubino added nine points and five rebounds while Erin Carney chipped in eight points along with five boards.

Marquette (10-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) was led by Ellis' 17 points followed by Carolyn Kieger with 11 points.

The Blue Demons return to the DePaul Athletic Center next weekend as they host Villanova. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. with the game televised on the BIG EAST TV Network. In Chicago, the game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Game Notes: The win was the first for DePaul in three tries at the Al McGuire Center… it was also the first BIG EAST road victory… the 15-1 start equals the 2003-04 squad for the best start in school history… Khara Smith's double-double was the 65th of her career… it was also her 99th career game in double-figures… it was also her third straight game with at least 25 points… DePaul has held seven opponents to a .350 field goal percentage or less this season… the Blue Demons lead the series, 28-18, and have won two straight… the 15-point margin of victory was the largest in Milwaukee since an 87-60 win on Jan. 15, 1996.
