DePaul Women Complete the St. John's Sweep

CHICAGO – A 70-67 win over St. John's on Saturday night put the No. 16/15 DePaul Blue Demons in the driver's seat for a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament. Caprice Smith came off the bench to score 17 points to lead four Blue Demons in double-figures. DePaul stands in a tie for third place with two regular-season games remaining.

St. John's opened up a 17-11 lead by knocking down seven of their first 11 shots. The Blue Demons came back with a 10-3 run capped by a Khara Smith three-pointer and a running jumper in the lane by Caprice Smith for a 21-20 lead. Smith's jumper came with just under nine minutes left in the first half to give DePaul their first lead since the start of the game. The Red Storm answered with a Tara Walker three-pointer before Holly Medley drained a DePaul three to put the Blue Demons back ahead, 24-23.

With just over a minute on the clock, Caprice Smith gave the Blue Demons their largest lead at four points. Monique McLean cut the deficit to two points only to see Smith hit the final basket of the half for a 33-29 halftime lead for DePaul.

DePaul built a 12-point lead six minutes into the second half at 45-33 with back-to-back three's by Caprice Smith. St. John's chipped away and tied the game five minutes later as Tara Walker drained the Red Storm's sixth three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 48-48 with 9:17 on the clock.

Jenna Rubino answered for DePaul with a three-pointer to give the Blue Demons their first field goal in nearly three minutes. The Blue Demons scored eight of the game's next 10 points for a 56-50 advantage with 7:39 on the clock.

St. John's cut the deficit to two points before Caprice Smith nailed her third three-pointer of the night. The Red Storm didn't go away as they scored five straight points for a 63-61 lead at the 4:34 mark.

The next four minutes saw the scored tied three times with an Angela Clark jumper knotting the score at 67-67 with 32 seconds left.

DePaul (22-5, 9-5 BIG EAST) took the lead for good when Rachael Carney found Khara Smith for the go-ahead basket with 11 ticks on the clock. Tara Walker's bid to tie the game went off the rim and Erin Carney gathered the rebound and was fouled with two second left. She hit one of two free throws for the final score of 70-67.

Caprice Smith's 17 points were a season high for the sophomore. She also gathered five rebounds while blocking two shots. Khara Smith added 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals while Rubino and Quigley scored 12 points apiece. Quigley added seven assists while Rubino hit a pair of three-pointers.

St. John's (19-6, 9-5 BIG EAST) was led by Kia Wright with 16 points while Clark added 14 and Walker scored 12 points. The Blue Demons and Red Storm sit in a tie for third place in the BIG EAST standings with DePaul holding the tiebreaker on the 70-67 victory.

The Blue Demons play the first of their two final regular-season games next Saturday at Providence. Syracuse visits the DePaul Athletic Center on Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the regular-season finale.

Game Notes: DePaul has won 51 consecutive games at home over unranked opponents… the 22 wins mark the ninth season in school history with at least 22 victories… DePaul has made a three-pointer in 35 straight games and in 294 of the last 295 games… the win was No. 370 for Doug Bruno at DePaul… it was also the 335th home victory in school history… the Blue Demons have won 93 of their last 120 games dating back to the start of the 2002-03 season… Saturday was the first meeting between the two programs.
