Gary McGhee: Indiana Big Man Shaping Up

In this report talks with SYF Players AAU coach Wayne Brumm about class of 2007 prospect Gary McGhee, Jr. McGhee, a 6-10 260 lb. big man from Anderson, Indiana, has been improving and receiving attention from college coaches while on the spring AAU circuit.

Gary McGhee has been playing with SYF Players teammates Robbie Hummel, E'twaun Moore, and Scott Martin. While McGhee may not be as heralded as his teammates, who are all ranked in the Class of 2007 Top 100, he has plenty to offer any NCAA school looking for an agile big man.

"He's an athletic big kid," said SYF Players coach Wayne Brumm. "(Gary) gets off his feet very quick. He's long, he's got a great body. He'll be able to carry a lot of muscle in the future. In fact, he's working really hard on his body right now. He's dropped about 30 pounds of fat and he's really getting strong. What he brings is that he's just a force inside. He's really learning the back to the basket moves. Defensively he's terrific. Offensively he's come along. He can rebound and he finishes around the basket. If you don't double him and he catches you close to the basket, he's just going to dunk on you."

McGhee has already started to accumulate scholarship offers from a variety of schools including Ball State, DePaul, Illinois State, Michigan, Oklahoma State, and Wisconsin. Gary took an unofficial visit to Madison, Wisconsin last fall. He is also receiving interest from Florida, Indiana, Iowa State, Purdue, and Virginia.

One reason that McGhee is in demand is that there is a short supply of players his size. "There's just not that many dominant big kids out there," Brumm said. "He's got a big time upside."

Look for the next couple months to be key in McGhee's recruiting. "It's early in his recruitment," Brumm observed. "July is going to be good for him. After July, he's going to have to narrow it down and start taking some visits."
