Derrick Rose: Ponders Future at ABCD Camp

Derrick Rose, the fourth ranked player in Scout.com's Class of 2007, injured his ankle after playing one day at the 2006 Reebok ABCD camp. WeAreDePaul.com's Dan Stack caught up with Rose and his older brother Reggie, coach of the MeanStreets Express AAU team, while he pondered his future as he took in the games at ABCD camp in Teaneck, NJ. The Rose's discuss Derrick's recruitment in this report.

The saga known as the recruitment of Derrick Rose, the 6-3 205 lb. point guard from Chicago (Simeon High), Ill, has taken on of a life of its own. With Derrick's brother Reggie very protective and secure with the recruitment, information is being guarded like Fort Knox. Everyone wants a piece of Derrick. Internet buzz has him going to Memphis one day. The next day it is Illinois. This goes on and on across many websites. For Blue Demon fans, keep your fingers crossed, as Rose shared with us - DePaul is in the loop.

"Yes, DePaul (is involved), I'm open to really anybody right now, if they got a motion offense. I'll go anywhere," replied Rose when asked if DePaul is in the mix.

By now you know the legend of Derrick Rose. He is regarded as Illinois' best high school player hands down and a top four player in the country for the class of 2007. He is electric when he is on the court. He has a game that everybody feeds off of, evidenced by Rose willing his Simeon team to the Illinois Class AA state title this past year. He has great point guard instincts and can easily blow by defenders and either attack the rim or dish off to the open man. He has a sick vertical leap to go with an improving outside game.

Rose would not reveal a list to me but added what he wants out of a school, "Just the guard play at the school," said Derrick. "That's really it. Lots of motion offense."

Derrick's older brother Reggie had similar thoughts. "Well, we're just looking for a school that can show upside to his game."

Rose is familiar with DePaul. "From what I have seen they got nice guards, and that's what coach goes for, nice guards." DePaul Head Coach Jerry Wainwright has had some contact with Rose, but Derrick said a lot of the time he's not there to take the calls. "I haven't talked to him in a couple of months. But every time he calls I've always been out of the house, so he talks to my mother," said Derrick.

Reggie made it no secret that the recruitment of Rose is shut down for the summer. "During the season, we just shut his recruitment down. We just shut his recruitment down and let him play. Summertime, we do the same thing. It's kind of weird how we handle the recruiting process," remarked Reggie.

Nevertheless, everyone is after Rose and all claim to know a list. Reggie said that after the Las Vegas Big Time tournament that he and Derrick will whittle down the list to about seven schools.

When pressed for a timetable, Derrick just shrugs and says "I don't know when it can be. I could just wake up tomorrow and say I just want to commit somewhere."

However that is not likely. Expect this recruitment to drag on with many other hopefuls (likely Memphis, Illinois, Louisville, Virginia, and Kansas) eager to secure the services of Rose. Even if it's for just one year in college. Heck, there are now reports that Derrick may consider either sitting out the year or go overseas and play. That is not very likely.

One thing is for certain, if Derrick were to choose to go to college for one year and should it be DePaul, the local and national media buzz would be in a frenzy. Yes, Rose does bring that type of buzz with him. Much like how the city of Chicago was captivated with likes of Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and Quentin Richardson staying home and suiting up for the hometown Blue Demons. Keep you fingers crossed DePaul fans.

Ankle update: When speaking to Reggie Rose about Derrick's ankle injury at ABCD camp, he was optimistic that Derrick would be out on the court with Meanstreets Express this week. "Most likely he should be back on the court for (the Nike) Peach Jam. He's day-to-day. It's still got some swelling on the tendon. So we're just going off the way he feels about it."
