2008 Focus: Matthew Humphrey

In this report WeAreDePaul.com talks with Illinois Class of 2008 guard prospect Matthew Humphrey. Humphrey from Hales Franciscan high school in Chicago and the MeanStreets AAU team, ranks among the top of his class in the state of Illinois. Humphrey is coming off performances at the Nike Hoop Jamboree in St. Louis and Nike Camp in Indianapolis.

Matthew Humphrey performed well enough at the Nike Hoop Jamboree in St. Louis in late June, to earn himself an invitation to Nike Camp in Indianapolis in July. Just going into his junior year at Hales Franciscan, Humphrey played with the elite in high school basketball at Nike Camp. How did the 6-5 guard from Chicago feel about playing against that level of competition? "It's pretty cool," said Humphrey. "It's pretty fun. I like playing this high level of competition. I'm just trying to see where I fit in as far as my game and I'm liking what I'm seeing. I feel like I'm one of those elite players."

Humphrey can now be counted among that elite after holding his own with the best. Matt's play hasn't gone unnoticed by college coaches either. He has received interest from DePaul as well as schools in the ACC, Big East, Big Ten and SEC. Blue Demons head coach Jerry Wainwright and assistant coach Ramon Williams took in Humphrey's games at Nike Camp. Matt visited the Lincoln Park campus when he attended DePaul's Midnight Madness last season.

Humphrey already has a scholarship offer in hand from Notre Dame. Fighting Irish assistant coach Gene Cross watched Humphrey's games intently in Indianapolis.

While Duke is Humphrey's dream school. He does already have a favorite in mind. "I like Illinois right now," said Humphrey. "I like Illinois and Georgia."

It's no wonder that Humphrey likes the Fighting Illini. In June, Matt participated in the Illinois Elite camp and took an unofficial visit to Champaign. Plus, Matthew's father, Darryl Humphrey, was a star baseball player for the Illini.

It's not a surprise either that Matt should like Georgia. His cousin Billy Humphrey is a 6-2 sophomore guard for the Bulldogs. "They (Georgia) show me a lot of love," Humphrey said. "I talk to them a lot."

In the future look for Humphrey to be out playing with class of 2008 big man Josh Crittle. With Crittle's transfer to Hales Franciscan, Matt will now be teamed up with Josh on both his high school team as well as their MeanStreets AAU team.
