Catching Up with Cliff Clinkscales

For DePaul Blue Demons point guard Cliff Clinkscales, the summer is not a time for rest and relaxation. Clinkscales is keeping in shape and still working hard during the offseason.

"(I'm) just working out, running the track every morning" said Clinkscales when asked about his summer regimen. "(I want to) stay in shape the best I can."

When he isn't working out this summer, Cliff can be seen checking out the up and coming talent in New York and New Jersey. Clinkscales was spotted at the 2006 Reebok ABCD camp in Teaneck, NJ sporting a DePaul t-shirt.

Cliff Clinkscales is also keeping in touch with his DePaul teammates regularly this summer. "Yeah, I speak to them (teammates) everyday," remarked Clinkscales. "(Specifically) Karron (Clarke), Draelon (Burns), and Zo (Thompson).

Clinkscales will be entering his junior year at DePaul this fall. The 6-1 point guard is coming off a season where his scoring was down at 3.2 PPG, yet he was still productive in the assists department finishing second on the team with 68 assists.

When Clinkscales is in the game, the pace of the game changes. Cliff loves to thrive in transition. Whenever DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright wants to go fast, expect Clinkscales to be inserted in the lineup.

Cliff is excited about next season. "I think we can be real good, we got everybody back. We just had one senior that left, Marlon Brumfield. I think we'll have a great year this year."

DePaul struggled last year while in the first season under Wainwright. The team got off to a nice start going 7-4 in the non-conference schedule (defeating Wake Forest, California, Creighton, and UAB among others). Then once Big East play started the wheels came off and DePaul was never able to recover and finished 12-15 just missing out on the Big East Tournament.

However, DePaul did make strides towards the end of last season splitting their last eight games and defeating two NCAA Tournament teams (Seton Hall and Syracuse) in the process. This has Clinkscales excited. "Our first year with coach (Wainwright) we learned how he coached, and he learned how we play," Cliff explained. "I think we're going to gel real good this year. And (I) look forward to a good year, and maybe win the Big East."

Winning the Big East will be a tall order, but don't be deceived by last year's record and think DePaul will be a pushover. DePaul will not be an easy out and Cliff Clinkscales and his teammates will make sure everyone will know by the time November rolls around.
