After a 87-81 loss to Kentucky on Monday night, the DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball team enters a match-up with the NCAA Division II Chaminade Silverswords on Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Chaminade is a small Catholic university from Honolulu, Hawaii and is the host school for the Maui Invitational.
The Silverswords lost 88-63 to UCLA on Monday night in their Maui opener. Zack Whiting had 14 points and 10 assists for Chaminade. Darrell Birton scored 12 points all of which came on three pointers.
Whiting led the Maui Invitational field in assists last year and is a nominee for the 2007 Bob Cousy Award which goes to the nation's top point guard. Whiting averaged 14.1 ppg, 8.1 apg and five rebounds per game last season for the 2005-06 Pac West Champions. Included in those numbers is a 14 assist performance against Maryland last year.
"We are excited to hear about Zack's nomination for the Bob Cousy Award. Now the country knows what we believed all along here, Zack Whiting is amongst the best point guards in the country," said Chaminade coach Matt Mahar. "His size, strength and skills make him a match-up problem at any level".
Origin of the Silversword
Chaminade University is identified with the rare Silversword plant found on Haleakala, a dormant volcano on the island of Maui. The flowers of the exotic plant are said to resemble the cross, the symbol of Christian faith. The Silversword grows for up to 20 years before it produces a single one to nine foot-tall flower.
At halftime of the UCLA game, the Silverswords honored former center Will Pounds who died of a heart attack last spring. Pounds was affectionately known to many as "Hawaii 5-0" and "Mr. Chaminade" and was an integral part of the first ever Chaminade basketball team. His #50 jersey was retired. Pounds was the first college player in Hawaii to score 2,000 points and who was drafted in 1979 by the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Silverswords also honored the 2005-06 team with the raising of their championship banners.
DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright is seeking his 200th win in today's game.
